The Moroccan occupation forces released Sahrawi political detainee Mohamed Leishi on the evening of April 25, 2023, after he spent a full year in Moroccan prisons. Mohamed was arrested on April 25, 2022, at the Ibn Zohr University Campus in the Moroccan city of Agadir for his student and political activity demanding the freedom of Sahrawi students and political detainees and supporting the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence.
The Freedomsun Organization for the Protection of Sahrawi Human Rights Defenders, while renewing its denunciation of the gross and systematic Moroccan violations of the rules of international law against Sahrawi detainees, expresses its pride in the struggles of Sahrawi political prisoners in the face of their executioners. The organization confirms its continued efforts to expose the violations committed against them and calls for the exercise of maximum pressure on the occupying power to stop its gross and systematic violations of the rules of international humanitarian law and the principles of human rights, and to work for the release of all Sahrawi detainees.
Freedomsun Defenders Organization appeals to all civil society organizations and international human rights institutions to take serious action to expose the violations committed by the occupation forces of the rules of international law.
It also calls on the United Nations and the international community to take action to stop the systematic violations against the Sahrawi detainees in particular, and to work to oblige the occupation authorities with their legal duties to respect their rights to protection from ill-treatment, to provide all their needs for health care and to bring them closer to their families who suffer from moving from the cities of Western Sahara to Moroccan cities, hundreds of kilometers away, in addition to the struggle of contacting them.
