Who We Are
Freedomsun Defenders Organization was founded in 2010 in Smara, Western Sahara, with the purpose of protecting the human rights of Sahrawi defenders who face repression from Moroccan forces. The organization works peacefully towards realizing the rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and promoting self-determination for the Saharawi people.
The goal of Freedomsun Defenders is to advance human rights awareness, monitor human rights abuses in Western Sahara, and provide legal and moral support to those who have suffered violations. Despite facing restrictions from the Moroccan government, the organization continues to document and report human rights abuses committed by the occupying forces.
Unfortunately, Freedomsun Defenders does not have a physical headquarters due to the ongoing restrictions on human rights organizations in Western Sahara. Nevertheless, their reports on human rights abuses are highly credible and widely recognized as evidence of the violations committed by the Moroccan occupation forces.
Freedomsun Defenders organization operates using a committee structure, with the following committees:
Membership Committee: This committee is responsible for reviewing membership applications and determining eligibility for membership in the organization. It prepares a preliminary report for the executive office, expresses an opinion on each application, and provides a decision to the applicant.
Central Media Authority: This body oversees the organization’s media presence, preparing reports, press releases, and electronic publishing materials. It also monitors media coverage of the organization and submits reports to the executive office. This committee operates under the supervision of a Central Media Officer.
Research and Documentation Committee for Violations: This committee is responsible for investigating and documenting human rights violations. It collects reports from other organizations and institutions, prepares reports on these violations, and submits them to the executive office of the organization.
It is important for each committee to clearly outline its responsibilities and function within the organization to ensure effective and efficient operation. By specifying the roles and duties of each committee, the Freedomsun Defenders organization can ensure that its goals and objectives are met in a systematic and organized manner.
Freedomsun Defenders organization is guided by the following values:
Legal: The organization is focused on promoting human rights, respecting both private and public rights. It recognizes the importance of a global perspective in detecting violations, and is committed to supporting Sahrawi human rights defenders.
Peaceful: The organization advocates for peaceful resolution of human rights issues and renounces violence. It promotes peaceful methods for resolving conflicts and enhancing the universality of human rights.
By upholding these values, the Freedomsun Defenders organization is able to effectively work towards its goals and objectives, while maintaining a strong commitment to human rights and non-violent means of resolving conflicts. These values serve as a guiding principle for the organization’s work, ensuring that its efforts are aligned with its mission and values.
